T-cells attacked by HIV

Mice have been made resistant to HIV by sabotaging a gene in the blood cells that the virus normally infects.

Researchers who developed the treatment at Sangamo BioSciences, a biotechnology company in Duarte, California, US, hope to test it in patients by the end of 2008. If successful, the treatment could offer a more effective way for controlling HIV in patients with the disease, the researchers say.

Bad Breath

Specific bacterium found in 100 percent of halitosis patients. Oral biologists at the University at Buffalo have confirmed that a bacterium known as Solobacterium moorei is directly associated with chronic bad breath, or halitosis.

Halitosis is a long-lasting and often emotionally devastating condition caused primarily by bacteria living in the mouth. Researchers in the UB School of Dental Medicine have been in the forefront in identifying the bacteria that cause bad breath.
