Russia had the right Dutch coach. And the better team.

The long shot Russians, led by coach Guus Hiddink, scored two goals in extra time Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the European Championship with a 3-1 upset win over the Netherlands.

It was a sweet victory for Hiddink, who enhanced his reputation of getting lesser known teams far in tournaments. The coach guided South Korea to the 2002 World Cup semifinals, and he took Australia to the second round of the 2006 World Cup.

John Terry earns the Premier League's highest wage

The remarkable increases in debt, wages and revenue across the Premier League are underlined in a major new report that supports English football's status as the European club powerhouse.
For the first time, the overall amount spent on wages exceeded £1 billion during the 2007-8 season, following a dramatic £115 million rise for 2006-7.
The final figure of £969 m for 2006-7 represents an increase of 13 per cent on 2005-6, meaning that the Premier League continues to be the best-paid league in Europe.

Zenit's players celebrate their famous win

Zenit St Petersburg strode into the Uefa Cup final with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich after a thumping 4-0 win in Russia.

The Russian champions proved too strong for Bayern to end the German giants' hopes of reaching the final in Manchester.

Goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak (2), Konstantin Zyrianov, and Victor Fayzulin were enough to give Dick Advocaat's men a memorable win and send them into their first ever European final.
Bayern almost got off to a dream start in the opening two minutes when Miroslav Klose saw his volley kicked off the line by Roman Shirokov.
